How to Choose the Right Packaging for Your Coffee Brand

The Importance of Coffee Packaging
Coffee packaging is one of the most critical decisions a coffee brand can make. The right packaging preserves freshness, communicates brand values, and drives purchase decisions at the shelf. With so many options available, choosing the right solution requires understanding your product's specific needs.
Barrier Properties
Coffee is highly sensitive to oxygen, moisture, and light. For whole bean or ground coffee, look for packaging with a high oxygen barrier (OTR below 1 cc/m²/day), low moisture transmission, and light-blocking layers. Multi-layer foil structures provide the best protection for extended shelf life.
Degassing Valves
Freshly roasted coffee releases CO2 for days after roasting. Without a degassing valve, this gas can cause the bag to burst or compromise the seal. A one-way degassing valve allows CO2 to escape while preventing oxygen from entering — essential for freshly roasted coffee.
Choosing the Right Format
Stand-up pouches are the most popular choice for retail coffee, offering excellent shelf presence and consumer convenience. Flat bottom bags provide a premium look ideal for specialty brands. Side gusset bags are traditional and work well for larger quantities. Your choice should reflect both your brand positioning and practical requirements.
Our Recommendation
For most specialty coffee brands, we recommend a flat bottom bag with PET/AL/PE material, a one-way degassing valve, zipper closure, and matte lamination with spot UV on the logo. This combination provides excellent freshness protection while delivering a premium brand experience.
